Sisters Circle invites you to explore two different volunteer opportunities:
Imagine the life-changing impact you could have on a young girl by serving as a consistent presence in her life. Unlike most one-to-one programs, Sisters Circle’s dedicated mentors make a long-term commitment to our students from seventh grade through high school and beyond. A combination of monthly group activities (see our photo gallery), enrichment opportunities and one-to-one time builds strong relationships and provides new and exciting experiences for both mentors and mentees.
Sisters Circle staff support mentors with a new mentor orientation, ongoing quarterly meetings and trainings, monthly mentor/mentee programs, online resources and guidance and personalized attention.
You may apply to become a mentor any time throughout the year. Just complete the application and our Sisters Circle staff will contact you for an interview. Selected mentors are matched with a student typically during the summer after sixth grade. Our team will work with you to develop a meaningful relationship with a girl who needs your support.
A complete background check, personal interview and references are required. Volunteers must be at least 25 years old.
During the school year, volunteer leaders facilitate an after-school program for Sisters Circle’s middle school girls at our current partner school, Henderson Hopkins, in east Baltimore. These weekly meetings include a range of curriculum topics, such as individuality, friendship and peer pressure, expressed through creative writing, arts projects and guided dialogue. Volunteers co-lead these sessions based on the curriculum provided.
Sisters Circle middle-schoolers spend a second day after-school each week focusing on a specific theme or unit, often led by guest speakers and partners, including hands-on theatre workshops, career exploration activities and community service projects.
During this after-school time, our team learns about each girl’s personality, family life and academic capabilities and just as importantly, establishes a relationship of trust. This personalized connection plays a critical role in mentor matching and school placement in the years to come.
If you are interested in our after school program, please complete the application and our Program Director will follow up with more information. No experience is necessary, just the desire to listen, to talk and to enrich a girl’s life. A complete background check, personal interview and references are required.
